Document Summary

Lecture 2 - what is education research - sept. 14. Relationship exists between variables - cannot identify cause and effect. Can be several possible reasons for a correlation that remain unknown if untested for. Ex. class size and impact on student achievement - violence, ice cream sales and summer heat. Clarifies causal relationships - higher degree of control - problem = unnatural environment = bias reactions. Ex. place students in large and small classes and see the impact. High degree of control over variables - hard to generalize results. Findings are more easily generalizable - difficult to isolate independent variables - used to replicate lab studies. Data can be collected by observing of participants in the study. Students, teachers, parents, administrators, or any combination of those groups. Ex - attendance records, minutes of faculty meetings, policy manuals, student portfolios. Or interviews w/ those part of the ed. process by surveys or questionnaires to obtain personal opinions or perspectives.
