Document Summary

Convection: materials move around as a result of heating and cooling. Plate tectonics: earths surface is shaped by the extremely slow movement of tectonic plants large fragments of lithosphere: build mountains, cause earth quakes, volcanic eruptions. Intraplate: not a plate boundary: geologically quiet, with some excepts. Hawaii - volcano"s, plate is moving this apart and the volcanos become extinct. Alaska, predicted when the volcano would erupt: continent-continent collision zone, made of granite and less dense, they crumble up, crust is too thick, no volcanos. Himalayan mountains - keep rising: transform (moving horizontally past, crust is neither created nor destroyed, fault: fracture in earths crust, along which the blocks of rock on either side are displaced relative to one another, ex. Earthquakes: ground shaking associated with the release of strain energy stored in rock. Volcano: mountain created by molten rock (lava), hot gas, ash erupts though surface and cools. Landslides: large amounts of rock and soil fall downhill.
