Document Summary

Water quality is a human perception based on what we characterize as good: easily measurable. Ph = -log[h+], ph 7 means 10-7 concentration of hydronium ions in moles/litre. Every time ph changes by 1 number, its one decimal change. Affected by carbonate system: co2 + h2o h2co3 h+ + hco3, photosynthesis removes co2, pushing reaction to the left, more basic, respiration and releases co2, and diffusion of atmospheric co2, this. Co2 increases and reaction pushed to right, more acidic. Ph changes during night and day due to productivity. Most species usually accept fluctuations of 1-3 degrees celsius. Affects reaction rates and solubility of species. Solubility of oxygen decreases with an increase of temperature. Max is about 9mg/l, which is 100% saturation. Caused by amount of suspended sediments (could include microplastics) High turbidity: increases stream temperature, lowers max do, decreases light penetration and photosynthesis. Can clog fish gills, interstitial pathways and blocks the hyporheic zone.
