GGR112H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Gypsum, North Magnetic Pole
Document Summary
Two broad earth systems: endogenic systems- encompasses internal processes that produce ows of heat and material from deep below earth"s crust (tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanism). Building the earths surface up: exogenic system- involves external processes that set into motion air, water, and ice, all powered by solar energy (river, landforms, weathering, erosion, oceans, glaciers) Mineral- inorganic natural compound having a special chemical formula and a crystalline structure (e,g. , quartz). Rock- a solid aggregated of one or more minerals. Magma- a mixture of molten rock, which includes suspended mineral gains, dissolved gases and water. 3 main groups of rocks: igneous- formed from cooled magma, sedimentary- formed from the layered deposition of material, either at the surface on land or below water. Product of weathering: metamorphic- igneous and sedimentary rock that has been altered (structurally or chemically) by subsequent burial and exposure to high temperatures and/or pressure.
