GGR202H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Water Scarcity, Global Issue, Environment And Climate Change Canada
Document Summary
Have tension in what to use this water for. We have a finite amount of water, but it is eternal: because of hydrologic cycle. Can only use small portion of water from the hydrologic cycle. 97. 44% of the water on earth is salt water. 2. 53% is total water on earth that is fit for human consumption: 68. 7% of this is in glaciers that is inaccessible. 60% of water drains to the north. Most people live near us border, but a lot of canada"s water is being drained in the opposite direction. Human management of water is embedded in a social-ecological system. Recognition that nature doesn"t exist outside nature, they exist in a reciprocal relationship. When we consider water using a commons perspective: water is considered as a public good, we need it to survive, water is free, managed by local community. Commodity: we think of water as an economic good, full cost pricing, manager is the market.
