Document Summary
Ggr214 lecture march 26, 2018 global climate. Mega fsg april 12 4-6 pm. Office hours not on wednesday but on monday. Climate controls: geographic features that determine local climate. Latitude: most imp control on climate, controls sun angle and say length, major determinant of temp, ancient greeks classified climate according to latitude, torrid zone, temperate zone, frigid zone. Latitude also controls seasonality: distribution of land and water, marine climates are dominated by water bodies, smaller diurnal and annual temperature changes. Vegetation and climate: 5 major, forest, savannah. Tropical climates: bw 30 deg n and s, high sun angles, hot temp, surplus of incoming solar radiation, wet equatorial climate (af) Polar climates: warmest monthly temp below 10 degrees, polar high causes clear skies and low precipitation, two types of polar climates, tundra. Climate change: anthropogenic climate change is a global problem, natural climate change, geologic timescales show warmer and colder periods, rn, we are still in a cool house.
