Document Summary

Ggr227 lecture 11 pollution and arctic ecosystems. Overall is cumulative, but focus more on post-midterm information. Release of contaminants to the environment into the air, water and or soil that cause negative impacts to human health or environment. Some contaminants have both natural and anthropogenic sources. Some contaminants are man made [synthetic chemicals], and thus have no natural sources. Sources of pollution: point sources visible end-of-pipe pollution sources; factory, sewage pipes, non point sources pollution discharge occurs over wide spread areas. Bioaccumulation: accumulation of substances in an organism"s body over time because the body is slow at removing these substances: faster intake, slower outtake. Bio-magnification: the increase in concentration of a substance in living organisms as it moves up the food chain: biomass slow at the top of food change, but the top predator contains much of the contaminating substance.
