Document Summary
Charles v is the emperor of the holy roman empire. Most powerful emperor to have ever lived, arguably. Not categorized by states, but city-states, or principaliies. The princes/magistrates in some of the major principaliies are electors. The reformaion puts strains on an already fractured empire. Charles has territory in central europe as well as spain, as well as large parts of the americas. Has a lot of poliical as well as economic power. The german princes present a bit of a problem for the empire. His power, however, is sort of difused since he governs over such a large space. He is ighing against the french as well as the otoman turks. However, when the reformaion comes, the princes demand religious sovereignty in their respecive principaliies. Grants the princes exactly what they want (territorial sovereignty in religion) Bluntly commands all the lutherans to return to catholicism or else face arrest. Charles ights the turks for another 15 years.
