Louis the 14  The Fronde, 1648-1653 o Broke into the kings palace, cause him to be more guarded his entire life  Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683)  Mercantilism o Governments improving their local economies  Intendants o Chief bureaucrats, never served in the region they were from  1685 revoked the Edict of Nantes  Versailles o Used to domesticate the nobles  Had to live in the palace to be in the king’s favor  The most trivial thing could put you out of the king’s favor  Had to obey complex etiquette rules  Lever o Favored nobles were allowed to watch the king rise from bed, pray, and choose his wig  Coucher o Favored nobles were allowed to watch the king put on his nightgown, feed his dogs, etc. and get ready for bed  Used to create insecurity with the nobles  Living at Versailles was expensive  Had to stay in fashion, buy luxuries  Kept them from raising their money by wasting it  Kept a sense of hierarch
