When you are talking about power, rarely is it a function of a single person. Chretien won 3 majority governments for the liberal party but was pressured to resign in. 2003: even when he was in power people asked this question of whether or not he was invincible. Sponsorship scandal that the government was involved in where they gave advertisement campaigns money who supported the liberals. In 2002 chretien knew that people were not happy about this scandal so he said he would want to retire in 2004. Chretien was invincible but the media and electors showing dis-satisfaction there was opposition building up towards him which forced him to resign. When chretien stepped down the new liberal party selected paul martin he was not elected by us but rather the liberals selection chretien as there leader.
