POLSCI 3J03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Sponsorship Scandal, Socalled, Justin Trudeau
Document Summary
In 2011 following the federal election, the liberal party hit a new low. The party that built modern canada and governed for most the 20th century was reduced to third-party status. Only recently under jean chretien had they formed three successive majority parties. There was speculation of a one party-state in canada at the federal level under the liberals. The party had obtained the most votes than any other party in 13 of the 17 federal elections held between. Up until 2006, every liberal leader with one exception had served as prime. There was talk of the liberal party dying out, the end of liberalism and centre-thought politics in canada. One of the most obvious short-term mistakes made by the liberal party was its choice of leaders. Beginning in 2003 with paul martin, a former finance minister under chretien, the party proceeded to choose three leaders within the space of 5 years, each of whom was fatally flawed.
