PHL145H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Social Facilitation, Social Proof
Document Summary
We have to rely on others. (food, knowledge,) We spend a lot of time and energy trying to convince other people. One way to persuading someone is by giving them a good argument that employs premises they accept. Or we can manipulate them; like saying whatever they want to hear in order to get what i want. Socialization: we acquire many of our most fundamental beliefs, attitudes, and values in the very process of growing up. Experts: we rely on them to give us information. Mere presence: our performance on cognitive tasks is affected by the mere presence of others; even as passive audience can influence how well we do. Conformity: we are very strongly influenced by the views and actions of our peers (or those of members of groups we admire) Obedience: we are all more susceptible to the views and commands of those in authority than we would suppose.
