Abnormal behaviour can be viewed as a disease. Used to be thought of as superstitions (possession by the devil) treated by exorcism, chants. Creates stigmatization of labels (psychotic being dangerous) Etiology= cause and developmental history of an illness. Szasz= states that a disease/ illness can only effect the body. Mental illness is a deviation from social norms. Criteria of abnormal behaviour: deviance: deviation from what is socially acceptable, maladaptive behaviour: not adjusting to situations, ex) drugs altering behaviour, personal distress: depression or anxiety disorders. Ex) someone with lot of tattoos and piercings shows deviant behaviour but it does not mean they have a psychological disorder. Most can be treated spontaneously or with treatment: people with the disorders are violent & dangerous. Only a small proportion are actually violent. Violence comes from a history with violence: behave stra(cid:374)ge a(cid:374)d are very differe(cid:374)t fro(cid:373) (cid:858)nor(cid:373)al(cid:859) people.
