Document Summary
Basic sensory and perceptual processes: we learn about world through sensory + perceptual experiences. Methodological considerations: babies cannot report their perceptual experiences, so researchers must devise reliable methods, can use to determine perceptual ability: Very good method --> relatively 2161 + complicated. Diff faces to sweet vs sour vs bitter: habituation paradigm (1) after repeated exposure to a stimulus, babies will habituate to that stimulus (stop responding to it) (2) babies generally prefer to attend toward a novel stimulus thus . Present a stimulus until the baby shows very lil response (i. e. , habituates) + then add a new stimulus. If the baby shows attention toward the new stimulus, then s(he) can perceive the diff between the 2 stimuli. Old = boring --> not interested --> basically ignore it. Most commonly used method to study infant perception (particularly visual + sound)
