Today"s lecture examines the validity of personality measures. It also tells you about valid and invalid cues that reveal personality traits (e. g. , on a date). It also examines how well you know your own personality. Self-report: cheapest measure, not automatically valid because you are the one that is answering the questions, we have to distinguish how you view yourself and your true personality. Assumes that people are able to report their personality accurately (requires self- knowledge: we cannot assume that people can accurately answer the question of who they are; especially in children. Assumes that people are willing to report their personality accurately (problem of social desirable responding) Cannot be used with individuals and in situations that do not meet these assumptions. Like self-reports, they assume that informants are able and willing to provide accurate information: having more than one informant helps to make the report more accurate.
