Document Summary

Lecture 5: how people adapt their own culture, with the new culture that they are immersed in and the negotiation pattern that occurs. People migrate to different contexts cultural ghettos, homogenous neighbourhoods, cultures that actively discriminate against them: people"s heritage cultures vary in similarity to the culture of the new environment. It leads to negative feelings: the adjustment phase: where you begin to adapt to your surroundings, there can be varied levels of adjustment across different people, the level of adjustment will affect how positive you will feel. It is different to capture the acculturation process because people have such different reasons for coming. If someone is positive about both it is integration. If they are negative about both its marginalization. If they are negative about host but positive about heritage culture its assimilation. If they are positive about heritage and negative about host is separation.
