PSY331H5 Lecture 2: Evolution of Emotions Lecture 2: Social Psychology of Emotion
Document Summary
Emotions enabled adaptive responses to threats to survival and to enable people to form relationships critical to passing on genes: passing on genes is important, marker for success. Idea that animals and plants produce more offspring that is necessary to replace themselves. Each offspring will be somewhat different than others based on their genes. Some can survive in different places/environments than others. Peppered moth: camo against tree bark from predators, different variations of the moth are darker in colour and therefore don"t camo as well. Once the industrial revolution occurred, the darker moths became more adaptive. Most adaptive variants are going to survive. Example: giraffes, longer necks could reach taller trees than other animals couldn"t reach. Pressures that determine who will survive and who will die. Goal is to pass genes on, survival matters less if you don"t reproduce. Intersexual competition: selected for because they are appealing to the opposite sex. Muscles for men, tighter clothes for women.
