Document Summary

Devolution of emotions: emotions enabled adaptive responses to threats to survival and to enable people to form relationships critical to passing on genes, passing on genes is a marker for success. Are emotions evolved: introduce evolutionary theory, dar(cid:449)i(cid:374)"s co(cid:374)tri(cid:271)utio(cid:374, principle 1: emotions serve functions, adaptive, principle 2: emotions are universal, if they are helping us survive as humans, they should be found universally. Basic evolutionary theory: three processes, superabundance, animals and plans produce more offspring that are necessary to replace themselves, more than 1 off spring, e. g. Intersexual competition: traits that are selected for because they are appealing to the opposite sex, males showing off their strength, women showing off curves. Adaptations: preferences for things that look cute ** Dar(cid:449)in"s e(cid:448)olutionary approach: emotions are evolutionarily evolved, help us survive, focused primarily on the function but their expression as well. In humans, facial expressions are similar: principle of antithesis. This was the first attempt to explain emotion expression.
