Family is the basic social unit, a group. Traditional: man is the breadwinner, woman stays home to take care of kids. Regular: man and woman cohabitating with a sexual relationship. Economic cooperation: man can only work if someone is taking care of the rest of the house. Reproduction: children are economic assets that whom you can press into labor. Socialization: must teach children norms, rules, etc if they are to carry on the family business. If the family structure decays, there are social problems: marriage rates are decreasing while cohabitation is increasing. More likely to get divorced if you cohabitate before marriage. Those who are more comfortable with cohabitating will be more likely to divorce after marriage: age of first marriage is rising. Push education further; it takes longer to become financially stable to support a family: more divorces overall, but they are declining.
