Document Summary
Soc 100: the whole point is to be systematic. Process: formulate question, review literature, select method, collect data, analyse data, report results. It is constructive: cannot be reduced to general variables. Interwoven variables: two ways, diff approaches that are non-numerical, purpose, trying to understand something, context as well, approach. Inductive most of the time: bottom to find out idea, deductive sometimes. Start with idea and find out evidence: descriptive, role, empathic, trying to understand from their point of view, pros and cons, excellent depth, flexible, takes a lot of skill, can"t generalize. Quantitative: assumptions, objective reality, purpose, generalizability, predictability. 2: manipulation and control numerical, role, to be detached and impartial, pros and cons, can do massive studies, can be generalized, can have a really controlled data, the way in which you ask the question matters. Survey/interview: ask people, can be open ended or closed ended. Analysis of existing or official sources: anybody can use data.
