Historical shift leading to development of sociology: growth of science. People more influenced by science and moved away from religious influence. Provided framework on how to study social work. Emile durkheim; influenced by idea of positivism; objective value-free research. Industrial revolution & capitalism: transformation in how people earned money, move from agriculture to factory work, didn"t own land anymore; factories owned by someone else, erosion of community ties; sense of community. Urbanization: cities became chaotic, crowded, and unsanitary due to more people relocating. Rise of states and political revolutions: government exert control over people lives in ways that have never been seen before, revolution & unrest against government control. Sociology began by theorists wanting to make sense of new system. Two criterion of sociological theory: empirical component, must be able to test idea; data. Ideas must be sociological: questions or ideas must have social world at centre. Society: complex system of parts working together to promote solidarity and stability.
