Rise of states and political revolutions: government exert control over people lives in ways that have never been seen before, revolution & unrest against government control. Sociology began by theorists wanting to make sense of new system. Two criterion of sociological theory: empirical component, must be able to test idea; data. Ideas must be sociological: questions or ideas must have social world at centre. Society: complex system of parts working together to promote solidarity and stability.
