Document Summary

Chapter 8 - sexuality and gender. People are uncomfortable with ambiguity. Social construction - somehow in someway we"ve decided we have a range of physiological different people. Identification with, or sense of belonging to a particular sex (biologically, psychologically, socially) Nothing real about it, except for the pressure. Gender ideologies - set of ideas about what constitutes appropriate masculine and feminine roles and behaviours. Heteronormativity - holds that heterosexuality is the normal sexual orientation, and assumes an alignment between biological sex, gender identity, and gender roles. Patterns, categories, relationships male/female that align logically are normal = anything that doesn"t is abnormal. Sexual orientation are normal = anything that doesn"t is abnormal. Variation in sex characteristics that do not allow distinct sex identification. Break social norms by defying rigid gender distinctions. Alter their gender, believe they were born in the wrong body. Prefer sexual partners of the opposite sex. Prefer sexual partners of the same sex.
