The eras of penitionary focused on incapacitation and deterrence in the early to mid 1800s. Pennsylvania system relied on silence and separation of inmates. Auburn system relied on silence as well but allowed inmates to conjugate. Both kept inmates rom society, leading to various times of harm. He ordered how it may heighten pains of imprisonment. Term was coined in 1961 in the book asylums. Patterns of interaction and the relationships that exist among inmates. Prisonization- process by which inmates become socialized into the norms values and cultures of a prison. Institutionalization- inmates who have been imprisoned to such a degree that they are unable to function outside the free community. Hocstellar and delisa- individuals who participate in prison economy adapt better to prison subculture.
