Crime is a means of exacting justice (or revenge) when legal means are otherwise unavailable. Men are more likely to commit violent crimes than women even as women"s rates of violent offending may be on the rise. Why do people commit crimes? (why do men commit crimes?) Control theory (have not internalized self-control, not appropriately disciplined) Strain theory (who"s socialized, women socialized to be afraid, hirschi, solidarity, self control) Routine activities theory (crime is a result of situations, opportunity and someone willing to take advantage i. e- leaving your door unlocked) Crime may result from deployment of masculinity to navigate and assert agency within conditions of inequality and violence. Set of behaivours, set of ways interpreting situations to reduce violence erupting. Crime may be an expression of dominance, respect, or dignity. Successfully pulling off a crime is a way of doing masculinity in terms of thrill and skill.
