Friday, January 24, 2014 Lecture 2 – Social Media  What are Social Media?  Internet­based tools and platforms for social interaction  Tools or platforms are websites   Interaction means reciprocal communication, where communication is done in  response to prior communication  Social part of the social media is the interaction that occurs back and forth   As a result, social media content is user generated  Some popular social media sites: Twitter, Facebook, Blogger, YouTube, Second  Life, Instagram, Tumblr Media Evolution • Is the relationship between sender and receiver mediated by content  • Traditional Mass Media  o Sender produces content that is sent to the receiver  o Newspapers, magazines, movies, TV, radios, books, music  o Taking about both news and entertainment  o Closed institutions that acted as the sender; very limited people in the  population chose to be senders, this limit also applies to receivers  o When the internet was first created, it acted as a form of traditional mass  media  • New Media  o Institutions that are accessible t the general public o Allows them to play the role of sender or receiver Network Effects • Social networks are ties that people have to other people though knowing them  personally • They have been shrinking • What is the role of social media in influencing the size and quality of people’s  social networks?  Network Effects • Pew Internet and American Life Project • 79% of American adults use the internet, 47% use social media • Average age of social media user is 38 • Of social media users, 56% are female • Of social media users, 92% use Facebook in combination with another site • Facebook users are more trusting than others, have 9% more close ties in their  real­world social networks, and get more social support than non­users New cyberbullying laws should pass this spring, Justice Minister says • Jane Taber — The Globe and Mail Amanda Todd suicide: RCMP repeatedly told of blackmailer's attempts • CBC News Identity • Beneficially, social media open up channels of communication for people with  shared interests. • Online anonymity can allow people freedom to experiment with changing their
