Ideology: karl marx, friedrich engels, false consciousness, fetishism of commodities, mystification, social reality if grounded in the economic base of society, the cultural superstructure is derived from this base. In bourgeois society, ideological illusions (mystification) prevent the exploited form understanding their true situation: antonio gramsci, cultural hegemony, hegemony = common sense, after marx. Interpellation: althusser"s term to describe the process by which ideological systems call out/ hail social subjects. In pop culture, cultural products address consumers to be part of culture (ex. Starbuck"s coffee drinking culture: looks at the structures that we can"t get out of/can"t escape, how ideology works at a subconscious level, combined psychoanalysis and structuralism. Ideology constructs us as subjects through interpellation: the way we are addressed by social institutions and structures (family, media, schools, religion, state) Identifying ourselves as an individual but at the same time identified as otherwise. Identifying ourselves with a thing: makes us a part of that thing, canadians belonging to canada.
