ANTA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Postorbital Bar, Adaptive Radiation, Depth Perception
Document Summary
Non-human primates: primate features, grasping extremities, opposable thumbs, big toe divergent to other digits, this helps with grasping onto branches of trees, relatively large brain. Large brain relative to body mass, indicating significant cognitive capabilities. Improvement of visual features at the expense of the nose. Long period of infant dependency: relatively long lives, k-selected relative to other mammals. "an adaptive strategy whereby individuals produce relatively few offspring, in whom they invest increased parental care. " Long lives: r-selected is different, meaning, "a reproductive strategy that emphasizes relatively large numbers of offspring and reduced parental care. " Africa: tarsiers are very specialized vertical clingers and leapers, exclusively faunivorous (insects, small lizards, etc. ) Infants have blue faces, "teens" have orange faces: macaques (old world), the most widely distributed non-human primate, only non-human primate found in europe. Japanese macaques are the northernmost living non-human primate: hominoidea, lesser apes (gibbons and siamangs), very long arms.
