ANTA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Morotopithecus, Most Recent Common Ancestor, Gigantopithecus
Document Summary
All primate evolution happened in cenozoic era (we"re still here) Laurasia (north america & eurasia w/o india) India crashed into eurasia causing uplift of himalayas. Size & orientation of continents affects climate: bigger the continent you"re on (the more extreme & more cold it is) Since evolution of primates (how it"s been) Recently, climate has huge variability going on. Evolved from therapsids (mouse-sized: diverse group of warm blooded reptiles w/ fur. Internal fertilization (still laid eggs until end of mesozoic) Eyes on sides of head (don"t have binocular vision) Don"t have primate characteristics (missing some of the primate traits) Not all species give rise to descendants (gone extinct) Omomyids: look like tarsiers (huge eyes, elongated tarsal bones, nocturnal insectivorous. Adapids: look like lemurs, diurnal (smaller eye orbits, omnivorous. Adapids = fused mandible, short spatulate incisors, large sexually dimorphic canines. In her stomach there were still leaves. Discovered that she was an adapid (ancestor to modern day lemurs)
