Intro to Anthro: Society, Culture, and Language
-we strive to look beyond the taken for granted world
-patterns that lie past the world
-political anatomy: the way time and space is organized in order to control bodies.
-ex: desks in a lecture hall can be seen as instruments of control in a sense that that
they're aimed at the front where the prof is, they discourage talking to neighbours.
part of a system of social relations that give meaning to the space they are in
time and schedule also control people’s behaviour
acts are never merely acts and objects are not merely objects, they are signals of
society
ex: some cultures don't use chairs.
ju/‘honasi tribes don't use chairs because they're gatherers an they are constantly
moving, they're way of discipline is different
-space differs too:
kindergarten class is colourful, inspires creativity and interaction
uni lecture is singular and dull because it directs you towards the prof alone, and to
education and independence
anthropology
-anthropos: being human
-logia: the study of-
-what makes humans different from other living organisms?
ability to rationalize
