Chimamanda Adichie: The Danger of a Single Story
Single story is showing people as one thing over and over again and that
is what they become.
Single stories are incomplete and make one story become the only story.
When we reject the single story, we regain a kind of paradise.
Radical alterity:
The object of anthropological study is different from the eye that observes
westerners. This is an invention of anthropology. Refers to nicerema a
description about how tribe goes in bathroom (called medicine place).
Truly the way anthropologists write about other people and the quest to
paint your subjects/objects that are fundamentally different from you.
“Otherness” is the craft of anthropology. Emergence of two disciplines is
division of labor. Anthropology has tried to reinvent itself. Big difference
between how it was practiced in the past to now. Difference the idea that
you can understand someone from the perspective of standing aside and
looking back. They story told about the anthropologist is about difference,
talks about similarities. There is a danger in one story and you shouldn’t
prevent them from telling their story. An American and African
anthropologist tells one story.
Power:
Power of the story telling. Anthropologists invest tales about other people.
They write ethnographies. The power of representation and what it does to
the person who’s story is told, who tells the story. Challenge stereotypes
or try to bring dignity to the person’s story you are trying to tell. Entire
existence is based on telling other people’s story. The ability of people to
have affect on others and exercise their agency is what power is. If you
can get people to do things for you, you are exercising power. Social
versus political power. Culture is something you share, learn, but
anthropology definitions don’t say that. We think of culture as something
that defines people. Multivocal: multiple voices. How we use power to tell
other people’s story. Keep this in mind when reading Remotely Global.
Happens in Togo (western Africa). Germans lost after WWI.
