Document Summary
Patrilineal: women do not pass on inheritance to offspring (taking father s surname) Matrilineal: mean do not pass on inheritance to offspring. Kinships defined by cognatic principle of decent: cognatic: both m & f pass off membership to offspring at the same time. Child will belong to mother s and father s group traces back as far as decent goes: cognatic system allows for flexibility kinship traces decent through one sex only, it is called unilineal decent. Unilineal decent system can be maternal or paternal, but use one sex to define kinship: discrete, easily tell where boundaries are. Double decent: some societies utilize both systems of unilineal decent (mat. & pat. ) for different purposes ie. yako, any kind of unmovable property is patrilineal inheritance, movable property (cattle, practises, pots & pans) are maternally inherited: 2 discrete groups with different purposes, not the same as cognatic.
