ANTC17 W10 - We see period of at least 1.5 million years of overlap between homo and Australopithecus *** o They must have been using different niche, food, webs to survive o Asutralo esp boisei were very specialized o Homo started showing more human like dentition - Homo o Larger brain size o Early homo still have very ape-like body plan – rudolfensis o Face was still thick compared to humans and later homo - Oldowan tool industry o Just very simple tools o Only few types in tools o Everything is very simplified Homo ergaster - Double of what these early homo species had - They were eating more meat on habitual basis. The potential was already there for language and symbolic thoughts - First homo comes from the Javaman. It was the first homo specimen ever found. o Things get a little tricky o We refer to Asian forms – they are more larger and specialized o But in East Africa they have similar species where they have more classic forms o We find them both is E and S Africa. But we more find evidence of tools than the actual fossils - Ability to use fire – intentional fire starts in S Africa o Need to be careful because accidental fire mimic human intentional fire - Some important features – these are orthonathic – flat face, looking like human - Tall as homo sapiens - Modification to their anatomy – back of neck that they had muscle structure that held their head when they ran –efficient long-distance runner * Nariokatome boy - Nearly complete - his 2 of molars were erupted, he was probably about 12 years old. This is an assumption because we are assuming his development by comparing to humans. - They are perfectly adapted to equatorial African life o Thin, lean, that allows you to sweat and get rid of heat - White of the eyes - During this species is when they lost their body hair in order to release heat o If you are biped you really just need head to protect you from body Koobi fora - Now there is arch - We knew that from laetoli – but there is a lot of debate on laetoli Homo erectus - Egaster specimen got their own names - The classic Asian species actually date 2 million years ago to half a million years ago. So Homo habilis form appears almost immediately. So there is a bit of weirdness going on o Zoukoudian from China o Caveman of dragon bones – so we don’t know how many were lost o Eugene Dubois - Extension of prefrontal cortex - Top right – Mrs. Ples - Homo erectus – very modern dentition o Basic form of homo sapiens already present in homo erectus - Beginning of Pleistocene o Forest shrinking, grass expands, rapid fluctuation of environment – rapidly going back and forward - Species in order to survive this – they have to be adaptive more than just biological Pleistocene backfround - 2.5 million years ago!!! Wrong note on slide change it *** to 780,000 mya - We see the use of early stone age - H.erectus and early archaic homo sapiens o Archaic homo sapiens is a new concept – before javaman we saw robust looking humans we refer to them as archaic. we no longer consider these homo sapiens but we call them Archaic homo sapiens. inlc  including - Anatomically modern homo sapien
