ASTA LECTURE 6 NOTES:
-Modern telescopes have been used to capture stunning images of the Crab Nebula, which is the
remnant of the supernova explosion of 1054 CE
- The days of the weejn were named for the Sun, the Moon, and the five plnaets visible to the naked
eye:
Mone’s Dag: Monday
Tyr’s Dag: Tuesday
Odin’s Dag: Wednesday
Thor’s Dag: Thursday
Freya Dag: Friday
Saturn’s Day: Saturday
Sun’s Day: Sunday
-In 500 BCE, Pythagoras suggested that the Earth was a sphere and not flat
- His model was mainly based upon the fact that the sphere was regarded as an object of geometric
perfection
- Eratosthenes was able to calculate the Earth’s circumference by observing the position of the Sun at
noon in two different cities on the first day or summer
-From 150 C.E, Ptolmey’s model of Aristotle’s universe was the officially accepted model of the universe
despite it being a poor predictor of planet positions
- Copernicus believed that the Sun not the Earth was the centre of the universe, and that the Earth
rotated on its axis and revolved around the Sun
-The most important idea from Copernicus’ book about his redefined model of the universe was placing
the Sun at the middle of the universe
- In the Copernicus model, Earth moves faster along its orbit than the planets that lie farther from the
Sun
-Earth will periodically overtake and pass the other planets
