Document Summary

They are both made up of the same elements and atoms. They obey the same fundamental laws of physics and chemistry. Living things are ordered and organized while non-living things are chaotic and are continuous with their environment. These 7 properties, as a whole, make up life. Life cannot be considered only one of these properties because they do not have the properties found at higher levels. Even though they have certain properties of living things: reproduce, evolve over generations, adapt to environment, they require a host. They don"t have independent metabolism, protein synthesis or reproduction. 979 protein-coding genes: only 4 genes are needed for survival, a lot of these genes were thought to only be found in cellular organisms. No organic molecules or macromolecules required for life. Origins of organic molecules: oparin-haldane hypothesis: chemicals in primordial earth were exposed to energy which resulted in the formation of molecules required for life.
