Document Summary

Population a lives in an area with a small predatory hawk that eats juvenile mice, but is unable to consume larger / adult mice. Population b lives in an area where the main predator is a large owl that consumes both juvenile and adult mice. Properties of communities: community interacting populations of different species found in same place/time, interrelationships govern flow of energy and nutrient cycling within community. Hutchinson (1957: proposed modern niche concept, describes all abiotic components required for an organism to thrive in an area, now known as the fundamental niche or the bioclimatic niche (modeling) Is defined by all the needs and tolerances of an organism. Ex) chthalamus stellatus and semibalanus balanoides are two barnacle species that can be found in the intertidal zone, but they do not coexist (distributions abut but do not overlap in intertidal) In the absence of semibalanus, chthalamus will take over whole area they are.
