Population a lives in an area with a small predatory hawk that eats juvenile mice, but is unable to consume larger / adult mice. Population b lives in an area where the main predator is a large owl that consumes both juvenile and adult mice. Students should be able to : define / explain significance of all red terms, distinguish between the fundamental and realized niche of a species. Explain why a realized niche might be smaller or larger than a fundamental one: describe how competition can impact the realized niche of two interacting competitors. Identify the different potential outcomes outlined in lecture: categorize predators based on their consumption behaviour. Describe a stable predator- prey cycle and relate this cycle to the mite predation experiments: explain the relationship between close mutualisms and coevolution. Relate this to obligate mutualisms and symbioses: from a given example, identify the type of interaction that is occurring (e. g. commensalism).
