All non-plants depend directly/indirectly on plant food (cid:0) every plant is under constant threat of attack (=herbivory) Herbivory = most widespread plant-animal interaction: often least visible, esp. insects are feeding on plants everyday. Mechanical defense incl. tissues & organs. Chemical defense plant secondary cmpds (toxins); self-made chemicals. Primary compounds basic cmpds needed for survival (life: products of photosynthesis, protein synthesis (i. e. carbohydrates, proteins, starches, cellulose, essential to normal cellular function & life (in general) ), strychnine, saponine, quinine, morphine, mustard oil, caffeine, cannabinol. Defense can either be systemic or induced [by herbivore attacks: systemic defense always present. Phys. defense often systemic: induced defense induced by an attack; presence when switch = on. If felt like being attacked (cid:0) produce toxins (chem. ) Plants contain neural chem. signals (cid:0) allows to know whether species a/b is feeding on them: depending on which species is the predator (cid:0) would induce phys/chem defense, specific to 1/few species.
