Lecture 10 the cardiovascular system and senses november 30. Page 587 figure 22. 8 an overview of the systemic arterial system. Page 599 figure 22. 18 an overview of the systemic venous system. Blood has a fluid matrix and it is plasma; 90% water and some proteins. Almost half of blood is plasma which incorporates tons of content relevant to supplying the body with essentials. The other half of blood is formed elements which are cells and cell-like components; red blood cells essentially. They are unique and they are called erythrocytes. Its shape optimizes the surface area for transport. When they are first formed, they have a nucleus and organelles but as they mature, they die off and break down. By not having a nucleus, this allows the cell to be more flexible and it gives them more area to bind the oxygen. There are two alpha and two beta cells. Inside each, there is a molecule of heme.
