Students should be able to : define / explain significance of red terms, differentiate between gpp and npp. Describe global npp patterns (terrestrial and aquatic), and explain the factors that influence these patterns: explain the factors that influence global npp patterns (especially wrt which impacts of climate variations and limiting nutrients) 2 processes important in ecosystems: energy flow (direction and how much energy is flowing thru ecosystems, chemical / nutrient cycling. If light is a factor, they would focus on growing taller. If soil nutrients are a factor, they would focus more on getting light: e. g. , npp allocation to roots, grassland and desert plants allocate more npp to roots b/c soil nutrients. + water is limited: npp can also be allocated to storage products (e. g. , starch potatoes) as insurance against herbivory losses [they create toxic defenses which are costly for growth], disturbances, frosts, or to defensive secondary compounds.
