Document Summary

Biomes are a reflection of their physical environment. Biome: large-scale biological communities shaped by the physical environment where they are found, especially climate: terrestrial biomes are characterized by the most common growth forms of plants over large geographic areas. Convergent evolution is the independent evolution of similar features in species of different lineages. Similar environments tend to have similar vegetation. The yellow portions reflect periods of time in which evaporative demand exceeds precipitation. The blue portions represent periods of subfreezing temperatures when plants cannot grow. Temperate rainforest lots of rain but never really reaches freezing. Very dry/never snows really -> super cold + short summers. Clarity -> determines the amount of sunlight gets through. Light availability -> shallow systems have more light than deep, clear vs cloudy. 10/15/09 ian zones = where streams meet -> prone to disturbance: main channel = fish/swimmers, benthic zone = insect larvae -> under rocks, sand, or stone.
