BIOB51H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Theodosius Dobzhansky, Crypsis, Cactus
Document Summary
"nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution. " Big questions in biology: what accounts for the diversity of species, how did life arise, why are organisms so well suited to their environments (how do we explain adaptation?) Similarity within diversity: there are patterns of diversity w/i species, e. g. , cacti are different from roses but they are all plants. "good fit" = adaptation: kangaroo that doesn"t drink once in life, plant that eats insects, weaver ants --> make home through larvae as glue sticks to glue leaves. Star nosed mole --> most sensitive organism in animal kingdom: cuttlefish have the ability of crypsis - change body colour / shape / texture, to match their env --
