BIOC15H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Punnett Square, Consanguinity, Bmw 1 Series
Document Summary
Gregor mendel deals with how traits are inherited in sexually reproducing organisms [like humans, animals, plants, fungi, protozoans] Genetics @ time of mendel and how he got started. No one knew about dna and chromosomes and visibility of traits being inherited. Smart choice 1 selected peas for experiment. Had flowers of both sex on same plant. Anthers of each plant made pollen that made sperm. Stigma provide landing pad & track for sperm to follow down to egg. Can snip anthers & bring pollen from different plant. Smart choice 2 chose to look @ discrete traits. Character/trait/phenotype specific visible characteristic of organism. Discrete traits/ discontinuous traits: inherited traits that appear as limited number of clear-cut, easily distinguished, variations [ex: purple or white flower, smooth or wrinkled seeds] look figure 2. 7. Continuous traits: traits that show many intermediate forms whose values show continuous range [ex: height, weight, iq, blood sugar levels] more common than discrete traits.
