Document Summary

Oxygen-haemoglobin affinity: polycythemia is an overproduction of red blood cells, anemia is a reduced in rbc, both conditions will have different. O2 content despite having 100% o2 saturation: this is because since the number of rbc have changed, the amount of o2 required to reach 100% saturation has changed. Sickle cell anemia: genetic disease causing abnormally shaped rbc and abnormally hemoglobin, the rbc are inefficient at o2 transport as result don"t carry as much o2, sticky, making them clog blood vessels, don"t live long. Modification to oxygen-hb binding: temperature decreases o2-hb binding affinity, metabolically active tissues produce heat and these tissues will need. Carbamino effect states that co2 presence is a competes for. O2 binding in hb and therefore reduces o2-hb affinity. In the lungs, you want to get rid of co2: causes a higher ph as the h+ binds to hco3. Co2 that can be unloaded enhance o2 binding: cool air breathed in (low temperature) enhance o2 binding.
