1: encompasses several different cell types with different functions, 11 main cell types but many more subtypes, hematopoiesis - process of all blood cell (red and white) development, derived from hematopoietic stem cells, anatomical site changes with age. Anatomical location of hematopoiesis: hematopoiesis is at yolk sac first 1-3 months, then fetal liver/spleen in 3 to 7 months, then at about. 5 months of fetal development, hematopoiesis starts to happen in the bone marrow. from 7 months on , its largely restricted to bone marrow. there might be some other sights for hematopoietic development. But mostly in bone marrow: early embryo: yolk sac and fetal liver, ~5 month fetus- shifts to bone marrow, bone marrow of skull, ribs, sternum, vertebral column, pelvis, and femurs major large bones of the body. Also occurs in the bones of the arms: blood cells are short-lived, therefore continuously renewed throughout one"s life.
