Cuticle- only part of the epidermis which does consist of cell materials. Where plants take up water and minerals. Very tiny and fragile ; also short lived (may live a week or two) Stinging nettle it has inserted in their epidermis trichomes that are very sturdy because the upper part is structurally improved by silica- chemical which makes up glass. Engaged in warfare against potential herbivore with a mix of mechanical defense by the enforced cell walls and chemical defense stored in their stingers. Due to adaptation in the epidermis where the epidermal cells aren"t flat but conical epidermis. H2o repellent epidermis of lotus this special mechanism of modified epidermis of lotus is also self-cleaning; they take away dust. Has two leaves which closes and are used to catch insects.
