Document Summary

Lecture 5: models of structures to explain properties. Substances are categorized on the basis of physical properties : covalent network substances. Ionic substances: metallic substances, molecular substances, different models of molecular structure explains differences in physical properties. Covalent network substances properties: high melting point: large amounts of energy need to be supplied to break all of the covalent bonds. Lack of electrical conductivity: there are no mobile charged particles: hardness: strong covalent bonds in multiple directions. Ionic compounds are composed of electrically charged particles called ions. Some ions have a positive charge (cations) and some negative charge (anions) Ions with different charge are held together by the electrical force of attraction ions form a three-dimensional repeating network called an ionic lattice. Properties: high melting point: a large amount of energy is needed to overcome the attraction between neighbouring ions, electrical conductivity: solid ionic substances do not conduct electricity as there are no mobile charged particles.
