Document Summary
Elements can be classified as metals, non-metals, or semi- metals. Makes of most of the periodic table. Solid at room temperature (except for mercury) Thermal insulators (don"t conduct heat very well) Cannot be made in to wires (too brittle) Can be solids, liquids or gasses at room temperature. Generally, lose e- to form cations in solution during a chemical reaction. When a solution loses electrons in a chemical process called oxidation. Metals get oxidized easily (rust on iron or tarnish on silver) Generally, gain e- to form anions in solution during a chemical reaction. When a species gains e- in a chemical reaction, it is called reduction. Non-metals tend to gain e- to form anions. Metallic character is how closely an element"s properties match ideal properties of a metal. More malleable and ductile, better conductors, and easier to ionize. Metallic character decreases left-to-right across a period.
