Document Summary

Bronsted lowry definition = donation and accepts of protons, acid donates protons and base accepts protons. We go by lewis definition of acids & bases because its comprehensive and it talks about movements of electrons and in all organic reactions you talks about how electrons move. Anything that donates a pair of electrons = base. Because acid and base reactions are in equilibrium which means it does not go in just one direction you can have it going back and forth. In the forward direction, acetic acid is proton donor/ accept of electrons from hydroxide and hydroxide is proton acceptor. In reverse direction, h2o is the proton donor and acetate is proton acceptor. Water is acid and acetate is base and the acetic acid would be our conjugate base and hydroxide would be our conjugate acid. How do you determine which direction a reaction goes. This is determined by the equilibrium constant.
