Toronto Green Standard
● TGS redefines what --- sets out performance measures, sets out what you need
to do in order to have your building considered green by the city of toronto
● Came out in 2007- voluntary
● A sustainable building / green building is not a building that contributes to the
death of birds -- incorporated into tgs -- bird safe measures incorporated designs

Ecology
● Enough will on council to make this a requirement -- all planning applications that
go through site process must meet TGS as of 2010 --- buildings have to be bird
friendly

● 1st gen of green standard was less specific -- newer ve
➔All uses: Treat 85% of all exterior glazing within the first 12m using a combination
of strategies:
➔For city owned buildings, first 16m
➔Why only 16m? b/c birds generally fly within their habitats -- street trees, tree
park, etc --
When does the TGS apply?
● Anytime an application goes through rezoning, site plan and subdivision apps
➔E.g. city hall, national ballet school, 222 jarvis street
➔Almost all new buildings have to be bird friendly
