Document Summary

Many past civilizations and societies were highly skilled in finding rocks and minerals, and the first known geological map was created by ancient egyptians over 3,000 years ago. Geology: the scientific study of the planet earth. Finding and exploiting these resources on the scale required forced new ways of investigating planet earth by a new professional called the geologist. In the late 17th century, it was widely believed that the earth was only about 6,000 years old and had been essentially as we see it today. Pangea: a supercontinent that broke apart 200 mya to form the present continents. Geology involves vastly greater amounts of time, often referred as deep time. At a rate of 1cm per year, it will take 100 mya for the currently forming part of the crust to travel the 1,000km. Fossils in rocks indicate that complex forms of animal life have existed in abundance on the earth for about the past 545 million years.
